Technical Sales & Application Engineer, Energy & HVAC

Location: Remote (East Cost, U.S.-based), with occasional travel for customer meetings
Type: Full-time
Poppy is seeking a technically-savvy, customer-facing engineer to support our sales efforts and deliver high-impact HVAC optimization and energy performance plans to Class A and B commercial real estate customers. You’ll help building owners and technical stakeholders understand the value of Poppy’s air measurement platform—from energy savings to health improvements—and lead the performance contracting process from technical analysis, modeling, and M&V when necessary.
About the Role
This hybrid role blends sales engineering and solution delivery. You’ll work closely with our sales team during pre-sale engagements to support conversations with technical stakeholders—especially engineers, facilities managers, and energy consultants. You’ll also lead post-sale delivery of HVAC optimization plans, energy savings calculations, and annual technical reviews.

This is a remote role with occasional U.S. travel for customer meetings and industry events. Preference given to candidates located in Eastern United States (New York, New Jersey, Boston, Washington, D.C., Atlanta).

What You’ll Do
Sales Support

Serve as the technical expert during sales engagements, joining calls with engineers, facilities managers, and sustainability stakeholders

Translate customer needs into HVAC performance insights using Poppy’s real-time air measurement tools

Build trust by answering technical questions and providing data-driven recommendations
Delivery & Technical Engagement

Develop and deliver HVAC optimization plans tailored to customer building portfolios

Conduct energy savings calculations and performance modeling using Poppy’s methodology

Lead technical annual reviews with customers to summarize performance, impact, and opportunities

Support Measurement & Verification (M&V) processes based on Poppy’s expertise and customer requirements

Collaborate with internal teams (product, data science, engineering) to evolve tools and technical deliverables

Opportunity to engage in public speaking on technical topics at industry conferences and ASHRAE events, contribute to industry research and published papers, and help shape new technical innovations in the field
What We’re Looking For

3–7+ years of experience in HVAC, building systems, energy engineering, or a related technical role

Strong understanding of HVAC system performance, optimization, and energy efficiency

Familiarity with ASHRAE Standards (especially 62.1, 90.1, and/or 241)

Familiarity with load calculations, energy modeling, commissioning, or M&V frameworks

Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings to perform HVAC load calculations and support system optimization.

Experience supporting sales teams or customer success in a technical capacity in remote work and fast-paced startup environments

Excellent communication skills—able to translate complex technical data for varied audiences

Passion for energy efficiency, sustainability, and healthy buildings
Bonus Points For

Experience with building automation, smart building systems, or retro-commissioning

Commissioning Professional, or Associate Commissioning Professional

Experience working with Class A/B commercial buildings or large institutional portfolios on adoption of new technologies
